Arts & Culture

Stillwater is home to the OSU Botanic Gardens, five local museums, and numerous unique restaurants. Five area lakes offer various activities from boating, water-skiing and fishing to camping. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy intercollegiate sports with Oklahoma State University’s athletic teams which have 50 titles to their name.

Through the Vivia Locke Theatre and the Jerry L. Davis Studio Theatre, Oklahoma State University provides the community with a wide range of musical and theatrical performances. Other attractions include concerts, museums and educational programs. Stillwater’s museums focus on local, university and sporting history including a downtown art gallery featuring local artists.

Stillwater has a thriving music scene being the birthplace to Red Dirt Music. Many Stillwater bands and musicians have started successful careers throughout the years including the Red Dirt Rangers, Stoney LaRue, All American Rejects, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Garth Brooks.

Stillwater’s downtown has a growing and vibrant night life with several wine bars, an Irish pub, sports bar, and a diverse restaurant selection. “The Strip” located near the university features restaurants and night life aimed at the young professional and college student.

Education

As "Oklahoma’s Education Community," the development of work-ready high school and college graduates is considered key to Stillwater’s future prosperity. The Chamber supports workforce development initiatives and encourages business-education partnerships to help prepare students for the workplace. Stillwater students consistently outscore other districts in the state on standardized tests. The Stillwater Public School district has been rated among the "Top 100" districts in the U.S., and Expansion Management Magazine gives Stillwater High School its highest "Gold Medal" rating for workforce preparation. 

The community has one of the nation's highest levels of educational attainment, with 84 percent having completed sixteen years or more of formal education, and nearly one in four residents with post-graduate degrees.

Events & Attractions

These are exciting times for Oklahoma State University football team to continue the great success story. Fall semester will deliver you some very intriguing football games plenty of competition, including a new quarterback.

Stillwater Farmers Market is dedicated to bringing their customers the freshest produce possible. They do this by requiring that all produce sold at the market be grown in Payne County or one of the surrounding counties. These include Logan, Lincoln, Creek, Pawnee and Noble counties.

Throughout the season, they will have fresh vegetables and fruits, meat and eggs, ready-to-eat foods and baked items, honey, bedding plants, herbs and flowers.

The City of Stillwater has been holding the Boomer Blast fireworks display for over 20 years at its current location, including a Family Fishing Tournament that is embarking on its 15th year. These events are organized and held by the City of Stillwater in an effort to build a more cohesive community and celebrate the independence of the United States.

Stillwater Medical Center, centrally located for easy access from surrounding communities, is an integral part of the community with more than a dozen medical facilities under its umbrella.

Recreation

Stillwater parks contain many of our treasured landscapes and lakes from the vast Lake Carl Blackwell to the multipurpose Boomer Lake. For a full list of parks in Stillwater, visit stillwater.org

Lake Carl Blackwell is a mid-sized lake of 3,350 acres, located 8 miles west of Stillwater on Highway 51. There is an abundance of fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing and camping but we also have hunting, equestrian trail riding, hiking, and an on-water fuel dock. Stop by our convenience store and stock up on food, fishing tackle, camping supplies, and a wide variety of other items.

Boomer Lake is an artificial reservoir that serves several purposes such as cooling the local power plant and providing entertainment and recreation. Boomer Lake has a surface area of 251 acres, watershed area of 8954 acres, shoreline length of 8.6 miles, shoreline development of 4.17, and a mean depth of 9.7 feet. The lake serves as a great source for fishing and contains many varieties of fish such as largemouth bass, hybrid bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, crappie and many species of sunfish.

Payne County is a golfer’s paradise and was named one of the top four college counties (and in the top ten overall) for golfing retirees by Golf Digest. The Golf Club at Cimarron Trails places a premium on good shot execution. Having recently undergone a $2.3 million renovation, Lakeside Golf Club, the municipal course, provides a challenging layout at an affordable price. Golf Digest recently named Karsten Creek a "Five Star" facility and one of the Top 10 new public courses in the U.S., and Golf Magazine called it the "38th Best Modern Course in America". Stillwater County Club recently re-built all of its greens for an outstanding course and offers all the usual amenities of a country club -–swimming pool, tennis courts, fine dining – along with great golf. All four of these outstanding golf courses--and more on the way--are within fifteen minutes of downtown Stillwater.
